A doula is a non-judgemental support person who guides a mother through the birthing year. A birth doula specializes in educating, advocating, and supporting a woman and her family as they welcome a baby to the world. A doula does not offer medical services. She is a presence to help parents understand the healthcare system and navigate the trials of childbearing.
So why not hire a doula?

what is the partner's role if there is a doula? |
A partner's role is not diminished by the presence of a doula.
In fact, I love working with families when the partner is involved. A mother, her partner, and their baby are becoming a family, a doula is there to support this process and help everyone during such an exciting and life-changing time. She will offer support primarily to the mother, but that can be done by helping the partner gain confidence in how he/she can also support mom. |
isn't a doula just like a midwife? |
A doula is a part of the birth process but is a non-medical person offering support, education, advocacy, and companionship.
A midwife is a specialized medical professional who offers prenatal care and is the medical attendant at those births. In Montreal, a midwife attend births at home, birth centre, or hospital. |
Is it true that doulas only attend natural, home births? |
False. Doulas will accompany a birthing mother whatever her birth plan may be.
A doula is responsible for taking care of the mother in her transition to motherhood. She is not there to criticize or pass judgement on a client's decisions. A doula is there to support a mother whether she chooses to give birth at home, at a hospital or at a birth centre. The decision to go natural, have an epidural, cesarean section, or any other amount of intervention is up to the mother and will be supported. |
