What you REALLY need to pack for the hospital (or birth centre)

Packing for the hospital can be an important and exciting chore in the last trimester. Many first time moms go overboard, and many second+ time moms forget some of the basics. Here is a basic list of the things that new moms find helpful to pack.

I suggest packing two bags: one for labour(small bag) and one for your overnight stay.
Mama's Labour Kit Packing List is another post!
When arriving at the hospital, bring in the small labour bag and leave the other bag in the car for later. If travelling by public transit or taxi, obviously bring both bags at once.

Overnight Supplies

Basic toiletries. toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant, lip chap, hair ties, maybe makeup,
What I would stress here is that you need basic supplies to make yourself feel clean for a day or two until you get home. Some moms like to pack some basic makeup items as they might be having their pictures taken.

Overnight Maxi Pads. Super Absorbent. Extra Absorbent. You want wings. You want the overnight kind (even during the day).  I say only stock up on one or two packages, as your flow will lessen a lot in the first few days and you might not need as thick a pad after that.
Some mamas prefer using adult diapers, but I felt more like myself (& less geriatric) with just the pads.
*May be included in hospital supply kit.

H&M Nursing Tank
Nursing Tank Tops. They are cotton, and easy on the budget. In the early days, they offer a light amount of support while lounging around the house. By wearing these tank tops, you forgo the need for a nursing bra, but if you need one....

H&M Nursing Tank
A nursing bra. Again, this is optional if you feel that a nursing tank top will do. You basically just need easy access for nursing. If going without any bra is your favourite option - do it.

Toronto company Bravado Designs will give you a FREE nursing bra. Find out how here.

Picture
Dark coloured underwear. Purchase these comfy cotton things for the last few months of pregnancy and you can toss them after you are healed. None of your regular underwear will fit in the last trimester so grab 5 pairs, or so.
*Disposable underwear (mesh) may be included in hospital supply kit.

Picture
A new pair of pjs. Something that unbuttons is best for those early nursing days. I say buy brand new because well, you deserve it. You are going to spend a lot of time lounging in leggings, sweats, pjs, etc. Treat yourself.

Picture
Socks. You will want them on your feet. Mamas get cold in labour and socks get dirty and wet during that time. Pack another pair.

Two lounging outfits. And one to go home. I suggest pants or leggings with long tops to go over. The best part about pants: all of the pads/adult diapers/things you have got going on down there are held in place. Wearing your nursing tank top with a draped cardigan overtop can make you feel more covered up & cosy too.

Picture
Flip flops. They will double as shower shoes and slippers for around the hospital.
*If you wanted to take a shower during labour you might want to pack these in your labour kit instead.

Optional Items for Mama
  • Pillow with coloured pillow case.
  • Nursing pillow. The early days of nursing can be challenging so having all of the tools required to make it go smoothly is great. Some mamas never use a pillow and do just fine, but it can be more comfortable.
Of course, you can pack whatever you want, but I see many Mamas who bring suitcases to the hospital only to use two pairs of leggings, a couple nursing tanks, and one baby pj. There are plenty of lists out there regarding hospital packing lists. In fact, most hospitals offer these types of lists.

Partner's Supplies
  • Change of clothes. Clothes in which you would want to spend all day lounging.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant for the nervous-new-parent-sweat...
  • PJs.
  • Socks. It is way more comfortable to have socks to wear around the hospital room at night then bare feet.

Baby's Supplies
Picture
2 baby pyjamas. This can be baby's going home outfit too. Because, I mean babies are so cute in anything.
If you are putting a fancy outfit on baby for the ride home, you could probably get away with just one pj.

Picture
Baby socks. Because that big world outside of the womb is chilly. Can be used as baby mittens: they stay on better and you are saved some money on funny little mittens.

Picture
Swaddling blanket. Keep your baby warm and snuggled up with a lightweight blanket. Also can be used as a nursing cover up (if you feel you would like to cover up).

Picture
A newborn hat. Babies are unable to regulate their body temperature very well. Help the little one out by putting a hat on that head.
*May be included in hospital supply kit.

Picture
Diapers & Wipes. Check the sizing of diapers.  Newborn diapers have a little cut out for the umbilical cord, but if your baby is going to be too large for newborn diapers, folding the diaper down in the front is just as practical. If you have no idea what I am talking about visit my post on umbilical care.
*May be included in hospital supply kit.

Picture
A newborn car seat. The hospital or birth centre will check to make sure it is installed correctly, but it is always a good idea to get it installed professionally or at least according to the exact manual specifications.
*Leave in the car until ready for checkout.
**Pack weather appropriate clothing in the car seat to dress baby as you leave the hospital.

Other Items
  • Tablet, book, phone, headphones, CHARGERS. Basically something to keep you occupied while baby sleeps.
  • Camera.
  • Hospital card & any paperwork regarding birth. Includes prenatal medical records, health cards, etc.
  • Cord blood kit. If you are doing cord blood banking.
  • Cash and change. For vending machines and meals/snacks.
  • A small cooler of food/drinks. A lot of families like bringing in their own snacks and drinks. Great idea for a healthy recovery.
  • A reusable water bottle or cup.
