Insomnia
About 80% of women experience some degree of sleep difficulties throughout their pregnancy. I am one of those pregnant ladies. There are ways that this population of mamas can combat their sleep problems. Some women wake often for trips to the bathroom, others wake at the baby's kicking movements. I wake up every time I roll over, trying to propel my belly across the bed into a comfortable position.

What can we do to sleep better?

Positions
Sleeping on your side, especially your left side is encouraged. This is the position that allows the best blood flow to baby.

Pillows
A pillow between your legs is your best bet. A standard pillow, body pillow or one of those fancy ones that wrap around your whole body will work. Just get something that will make you comfortable.

Nutrition
Making sure to have a healthy diet is key throughout all of pregnancy. Eating foods, especially those high in sugar or fried before bed will likely keep you awake. Steering clear of these foods and caffeinated drinks are a good idea for proper sleep.

Water
Babies make bladders smaller. Mamas have to pee more often. Drinking liquids too late in the evening can lead to bathroom trips during the sleeping hours.

Relaxation
Try finding what works for you to relax. Create a bedtime routine. Too often, we are exposed to screens before bed. Mamas should be practicing various methods for relaxation during pregnancy that will help them through their labours to stay calm and relaxed.
Dim the lights, moisturize that belly, give your partner a smooch, read a book, breathe deeply and close your eyes.
