Labour Kit Essentials Packing List

When scrolling Pinterest or mommy blogs, we often come across, "What to pack for the hospital" lists. We however do not often find what we should be packing for labour. As a doula, I usually pack my bag-of-tricks to include a few commonly forgotten items such as socks and hair ties. But for those of you who like to be prepared, here is a list of labour essentials.

Packing two bags for the hospital is recommended. One bag for labour (list below) and another bag packed for the hospital stay once baby is born. I suggest a backpack as there is so much going on in labour, it is easiest to carry.

  • Lip balm
  • ID, Health Card, & Hospital Card. As well as any prenatal medical records you may have.
  • A birth plan.
  • Dark underwear. A few pairs of old or dark coloured underwear.
  • Socks. There is always something wet on the floor.
  • Flip flops. Hospital shower is simpler with flip flops.
  • Snack. a light snack you would want to eat while doing physical activity.
  • A sweater. Choose one that is dark coloured and is easy to take on and off.
  • Music. If you would  like music for relaxation, or a hypnobirthing recording.
  • Photos. If you are a visual person and thing that positive photos during birth would help your labour feel free to bring them along.

Pain Management
  • Olive oil for birth. Something to talk about with your doctor or midwife. Can also be used for massage during labour
  • Hot/Cold packs. Talk to me about a belt for these hot cold packs.
  • Tennis Balls in a sock. For massage during labour.
  • Exercise ball. This is optional as many birthing units have balls available.
  • A partner or doula. Because we know that continuous labour support helps mamas!

Is there anything I am missing or that you felt was helpful to bring in your labour kit?
