I am sure you have seen the hashtag. #ChildhoodUnplugged. I am sure you have seen the cute photos of children playing in a field or dashing through a sprinkler. These kids all have one thing in common. They are playing screen-free. Today make it your mission to play screen-free. If you are a mother, spend some time with your littles in nature. If you are a wife, spend time with your partner (maybe practicing/trying to conceive a little one.) If you are a sister, take a walk with a friend. Just go and unplug. Leave your phone on the table and get down on the floor with your kids. Way back when I nannied for a family who had four children, a cat and a dog, we played a game at the dinner table. It was called Peaks and Valleys. The point of the game was to go around the table at dinnertime (yes, that time when everyone in the family sits together to enjoy a meal) and every person shares their highlight and low point of the day. They also get to add a secret: something that happened that day that no one at the table knows about. It was always a way to get the kids to sit and learn the art of conversation. And, it always worked. Try playing Peaks & Valleys with your family tonight. Share in conversation. Foster imagination. Encourage play. Learn to escape. Let me know what you like to do to unplug as a family. Leave a comment below.
